Audi is not allowed to register the letter combination of TDI

The European Court of Justice rejected a claim by a German company Audi abbreviation TDI, which Audi was trying to register as their own brand. Remember, this letter combination stands for Turbo Diesel Injection or Turbo Direct Injection, and is now used several other automakers. Their claims to this abbreviation, Audi filed in 1996, but even then the court would not allow to register a trademark. After that Audi tried to appeal the decision to higher courts. However, the final decision remained the same. Its decision the judges explained that at present letter combination TDI is already characteristic of certain qualities of the car, so it can not be registered as a private label. Company Audi, in turn, failed to prove that the acronym used to refer to any serious differences between cars of this brand of car competitors.
