Audi A3 goes on the offensive

Audi is preparing to attack now in the compact sports cars, preparing replenishment range of the latest generation Audi A3, which premiered at the Geneva motor show earlier this month. According to German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, to the base Audi A3 hatchback will soon be added sport wagon and a compact SUV, built on the same platform. A small station wagon Audi A3, according to preliminary information, should appear in 2004. This car will be built on the extended platform base model, and its total length is 25 inches higher than the length of the three-door hatchback. In this case, to separate the novelty of many familiar family wagon and give the car a sporty image, the company has decided to call the station wagon Audi A3 new name Sportback, instead of the usual Audi A3 Avant. Another equally important novelty will be a small SUV built on a four-wheel drive platform Audi A3. This car will not appear until 2005 and will have to compete with such models as the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander. It is worth mentioning that the prototype of the future Audi A3 Crossover was shown in 2000 at an auto show in Paris. Serial model will receive the same permanent four-wheel drive and a powerful set of engines, including a new 3.2-liter V6 rated at 240 horsepower, borrowed from the VW Golf R32, and a modern turbo diesel that develops a maximum torque of 400nm. And, as noted by the company, it will not be a thoroughbred off-roader, but a kind of mixture of sports and touring car terrain.
